Cracking College Admissions

In today's highly competitive world, most high school
students plan on continuing with college education after
graduation. What are the possibilities and requirements
for gaining admission into colleges? Here are some ideas
that will improve your chances of being admitted to the
college of your choice.

1. Get good grades. Good grades indicate good students
to every college. While A's are desirable, what matters is
consistency; B-average grades are adequate as long as they
are consistent. The way to achieve this is to know and
understand the objectives for all of your classes.
Assignments should be turned in on time. Find out if extra
credit is an option, but don't depend on it to compensate
for below-average effort and work.

2. Practice appropriate study habits. A systematic
approach allows you to plan ahead and turn in your best
effort. Set aside a few hours each day towards completing
homework assignments. This assures that you do not submit
work that is not well done and that you have plenty of
time to complete your assignments with sufficient
attention to detail.

3. Read a wide selection of books. If you don't enjoy
reading, start by reading a book or two each month. You
will be surprised how many great stories and ideas lurk
between the covers of a book. Choose from biographies,
histories, adventures, memoirs, and a host of other
genres. Borrow books for free from the public library.
Once you start reading, you may soon enjoy the habit.
Reading exposes your mind to new ideas and styles of
writing. Soon, your ability to express yourself and
your ideas will begin to improve.

4. Write as often as possible. The goal of writing is to
effectively convey your thoughts and viewpoint as
succulently as possible. This is a tool that can be
sharpened through practice and more practice. Start by
writing emails to friends on contemporary topics
giving your opinion and point of view. These could be
accompanied by letters to the editor of a local newspaper.
During high school, take assignments and classes that
require you to write papers and reports. This will help
you you learn to communicate your ideas clearly and
effectively.

By cultivating study habits like these, you can become the
type of student that every college is looking for and
instructors take delight in. You may also want to contact
instructors at the college or university where you hope to
enroll. Find out what they are looking for or expect in
new students. Then you can graduate high school with
confidence, knowing you are ready for the next step of
your education for life.
